De Commissie Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek en de vakgroepen van de faculteit Geneeskunde en Gezondheidswetenschappen organiseren jaarlijks een aantal lezingen met focus op (bio)medisch en klinisch onderzoek en hun toepassingen. Uitgangspunt is interdisciplinaire samenwerking. De onderwerpen van de Interdisciplinary Medical & Health Seminars zijn dan ook heel divers. Voor elk topic wordt een internationale expert uitgenodigd.
Doelgroep: studenten, onderzoekers, artsen en eender wie met een interesse in (bio)medisch onderzoek.
De lezingen zijn gratis en kunnen fysiek of online bijgewoond worden. Inschrijven is verplicht en kan via deze link.

IMHS December 2024 – ‘Kick-off core MoveLab’
Interdisciplinary Medical and Health Seminars - Kick-off Core MoveLab
As part of the Core MoveLab kick-off, the IMHS of January 2025 is co-organized by the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences and the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. This event will mark the official launch of the Core MoveLab, a recognized core facility of Ghent University. The Core MoveLab offers specialized expertise in both laboratory-based and ambulatory evaluations of exercise capacity, sports performance, locomotion, gross motor skills, and movement behavior.
Two keynote speakers will deliver lectures on groundbreaking research in their respective fields:
Professor Ruth Loos is Vice Executive Director at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research in Copenhagen and a globally recognized leader in the field of genetic epidemiology. She has dedicated her career to unraveling the complex interplay between genetic factors and lifestyle, such as physical activity, in the development of obesity.
Assistant professor Philippe Malcolm obtained his PhD at Ghent University and gained additional experience on wearable robots for walking and running at Harvard and Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Malcolm's research team focuses on biomechanics research with exoskeletons, exosuits, and other wearable devices.

Keynote lecture I - ‘Interactions between lifestyle and genetic susceptibility to obesity’
Prof. dr. Ruth Loos - University of Copenhagen
Professor Ruth Loos is a globally recognized leader in the field of genetic epidemiology. After studying Movement Sciences at the KULeuven, she has held prestigious research positions at the University of Cambridge, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Icahn School of Medicine in New York. She is now Vice Executive Director at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research in Copenhagen. She has dedicated her career to unraveling the complex interplay between genetic factors and lifestyle, such as physical activity, in the development of obesity. Professor Loos will discuss the latest advances in this dynamic area, shedding light on how lifestyle interventions can combat obesity more effectively.

Keynote lecture II - ‘Wearable robots inspired by and informing the biomechanics of walking’
Assistant prof. dr. Philippe Malcolm - University of Nebraska
Dr. Philippe Malcolm is assistant professor of biomechanics at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. He received his Ph.D. from Ghent University and gained additional experience on wearable robots for walking and running at Harvard and Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Malcolm's research team focuses on biomechanics research with exoskeletons, exosuits, and other wearable devices. In his lecture, he will discuss how interdisciplinary research employing methods from biomechanics has enabled advancements in wearable robotics. He will also explore how using wearable robots to apply perturbations can enhance our understanding of the biomechanics and energetics of locomotion and discuss challenges in this field.
