Interuniversity certificate: Basic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Course for the Rheumatologist

The course is run annually and organized alternately by and in UGent and ULiège. In odd years you can register at ULiège and in even years UGent organizes this training.
It is our objective to offer both theoretical and practice basic skills on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) showing different joint sites, in healthy subjects and in rheumatic diseases. The course is being updated on a regular basis. A 4-days theoretical course, with several hands-on session integrated is followed by intensive practice training during 40 hours in a recognized center with expertise in rheumatology (min. 20 hours in an academic center, 20 hours elsewhere).
Knowledge and skills are targeted to the level felt to be appropriate for European rheumatologists who would like to acquire a basic theoretical knowledge on MSUS.
This course is intended for rheumatologists and rheumatologists-in-training who have no or little knowledge and skills of musculoskeletal training.
In 2025-2026 the course will take place in Ghent.

Programma
This training takes place in 1 year and has 10 credits (4 basic course credits and 6 training sessions credits).
Programme
- Module 1 : Physical principles of Ultrasound
- Module 2 : Systematic Ultrasound anatomy of the upper limb
- Module 3 : Systematic Ultrasound anatomy of the lower limb
- Module 4 : Muskuloskeletal Ultrasound in rheumatic diseases
- Module 5 : Ultrasound Scoring in rheumatology
- Module 6 : Practical sessions in normal muskuloskeletal US
- Module 7 : Practical sessions in pathological muskuloskeletal US
The theoretical part will take place from December, 1 till December, 4 2025 at Campus UZ Gent .
The practical training will be organized in agreement with the participants between January and June .

Price: €855
There is an exceptional price of 250 euros for specialist rheumatologists in training.

Please contact prof. Wittoek first. After approval of the committee you can register for this course on this website (during the period of the 15th of August till the 20th of November 2025).
A maximum of 10 participants are allowed to start the course.
Admission Subject to an Enquiry into the Suitability of the Holder of the Diploma
- Master of Medicine in Specialist Medicine
Are also allowed:
- Students who have a certificate of equivalence of the diploma "specialist rheumatologist" or are registered in the master's degree in specialist medicine.
For specialist rheumatologists in training, an exceptional price of 250 euros applies. You can indicate this when purchasing the course.
