Interuniversity Certificate in Clinical Infectiology and Medical Microbiology

Training objectives and structure

The theoretical training allows candidates for the special professional titles "physician specialist in Clinical Infectiology" and "physician specialist in Medical Microbiology" to achieve the final theoretical competencies specified in the Ministerial Decree. With the certificate obtained after passing the examination, candidates can prove the acquired final competencies to the accreditation committee.

To obtain the certificate, participants must have a publication in a peer-reviewed journal within the field of infectious diseases. This publication must be revised into a thesis, which must be defended orally to a jury. The thesis defense will take place annually in February. The course includes approximately 135 contact hours and 200 hours of processing and exam preparation.

The course will span two academic years, with contact hours divided into 18 full classroom days of 8 hours of interactive contact teaching. An examination will follow the course at the end of each academic year.

Target audience

This training is mainly aimed at medical specialists and pharmacists and clinical biologists in training who aim for the professional title of Clinical Infectiology or Medical Microbiology. This training with an exam allows them to acquire the final theoretical competencies specified in the Ministerial Decrees on acquiring these professional titles.

In addition, the course is open to all doctors with a specific interest in clinical infectiology and medical microbiology.

Goal

The certificate for the program is awarded to participants who attend at least 80% of the contact hours and who pass the written examination. Presence will be recorded each course day.

The training is organized by KULeuven,  UGent, UAntwerpen, VUB, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, UCL, ULB, ULiège and UHasselt. Enrollment takes place at the coordinating institution. This responsibility rotates. The next editition will be organised by UCLouvain; enrollment takes place there.

Lecturers are chosen according to their expertise. The program's language is English: the course and exam will be in English.

The program is organized every 2 years in 2-year cycles.

The program will be built around the following topics:

  • Infectiology  basics and Host-Pathogen Interactions
  • Diagnostics and Laboratory Resources

Toelatingsvoorwaarden

Diploma requirements and admission procedure

After a screening of candidates and admission by the Steering Committee:
  • Physicians with the Level 2 professional title of a physician specialist in medicine and an approved Clinical Infectiology or Medical Microbiology internship plan, as well as physicians who have an approved internship plan for a Level 2 professional title in medicine and aspire to the Level 3 professional title of Clinical Infectiology or Medical Microbiology provided they are at least in their 4th year of training at the start of the program.
  • Pharmacists-clinical biologists or Pharmacists who have an approved Clinical Microbiology internship plan and aspire to the future equivalent of the Level 3 professional title Medical Microbiology for Pharmacists-Clinical Biologists.
  • Profiles other than medical doctors or pharmacists-clinical biologists or pharmacist can be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

During the screening, the candidate's initial competencies are checked: the training builds on the theoretical knowledge of infectious diseases and microbiology from the master's programs in medicine and pharmacy and the theoretical competencies on infectious diseases acquired in the specialist programs in internal medicine and clinical biology. The infectious diseases/medical microbiology training topics will always refer explicitly to the basic theoretical knowledge required.

Interested candidates must submit their applications before the next academic year no later than August 31. Candidates are screened by the Steering Committee - organized by the academic managers - before being admitted. An admission decision will be made by September 15 at the latest, after which the selected candidate will be able to enroll as a student at the coordinating institution.
